Ithink this site was the best thing that anybody could have done for the shipmates that served on the Mighty K. i was on her during the Cuban crisis and to tell you the truth at the time I was scared as censored because we were waiting for orders from Pres. Kennedy to give us the word what to do and knowing what was going on and what will happen after we did it. When I think about it now I still shake even after 40 years.I'm glad we were able to stop it when we did.I was on the deck crew just where a sea sick sailor should be outside.Name: leslie

Have been following this great site for a few years. For info, I came upon a description of Task Group Bravo's episode during the Cuban Missile crisis in a book written by some Navy Historians. Apparently our Soviet Submarine, named B-130, and commanded by a Captain Nicolai Shumkov one of the Soviet Navy best sub skippers, was indeed equipped with a nuclear warhead on one of it's torpedos. The reason it headed north after we, Blandy and the AirGroup on Essex surfaced it, was due to terrible batteries that forced it to abort it's mission to Mariel, Cuba. Fascinating reading, based on post cold war interviews with senior Russion former Admirals!Name: Robert Broder

I served on board the Keppler during the years 1960, 61 and 62 as an Ensign, then as a Lieutenant junior grade, and was First Lieutenant, then Sonar Officer, then Gunnery Officer. I remember going to the Caribbean during the spring, the Mediterranean during the summer, and the north Atlantic in the fall and winter. I remember Captain Bagby and then Captain Vito Vitucci. Those were great days and I have fond memories of being at sea and in port with the Keppler, stationed out of Newport, Rhode Island. We never, however, shot in anger, only at targets, and we were pretty good shots.Name: Reade H. Ryan, Jr.
